Martin Wickramasinghe (1890-1976) was a Sri Lankan journalist and author who is considered one of the country's greatest writers. He is often called the father of modern Sinhala literature. 

Life: 

  • Born in Koggala, Sri Lanka on May 29, 1890.
  • Attended Buonavista College in Galle, Sri Lanka.
  • Died on July 23, 1976.
  • Was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 1953.

Work:

  • Published 14 novels and 104 short stories. 
  • Edited the Sinhalese newspapers Dinamina, Silumina, and Lakmina. 
  • His works are known for their portrayal of Sri Lankan culture and life.
  • His novel Viragaya is considered his most heralded work. 
  • His writings explore the life and culture of the people of Sri Lanka. 

Legacy:

  • The Martin Wickramasinghe Folk Museum is located on the grounds of his ancestral home. 
  • The Martin Wickramasinghe Trust was established to preserve his manuscripts, first editions, tape recordings, and photographs.
